Avoid Prostate Problems

Are you worried about prostrate cancer? Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among American men. It is a slow-growing disease that mostly affects older men. In fact, more than 60 percent of all prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65.

It turns out - what you eat affects your prostate. Diet and exercise are vital to help ward off prostate cancer and the ill effects of an enlarged prostate.

Lose Weight Carrying around too many extra pounds? Make it priority to lose weight. The most consistent finding is that body size influences your prostate cancer risk, says June Chan, ScD, associate professor of epidemiology, biostatistics, and urology at the University of California San Francisco. Men who are overweight or obese have a greater risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer and of dying from the disease.

When men overeat they increase their risk of getting prostate cancer.

Eat Less Meat and Dairy Guys who eat a lot of meat (especially red meat), drink lots of milk, or gobble dairy-based foods tend to have a higher risk of prostate cancer, Platz says. Beef, processed meat (e.g., bacon, hotdogs, and deli meat), poultry with the skin, and full-fat dairy appear to be the prostate's biggest foes, Chan adds.
That goes not just for cancer, but for an enlarged prostate as well. "Men who eat red meat are three times more likely to have an enlarged prostate, and those who eat dairy are twice as likely to develop an enlarged prostate," says men's nutrition expert Jim White, RD.

Eat More Veggies To keep your prostate happy, bulk up on vegetables. Eating three or more servings of veggies a day can cut your risk of prostate cancer in half. The cruciferous kind (e.g., broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts) may have an especially potent effect -- especially if you eat three or more servings a week, which can lower your prostate cancer risk by an extra 41%. Some studies suggest that lycopene, a chemical found mainly in tomatoes, can also slow prostate cancer growth.

What's good for your prostate is most often what's good for your overall health. Instead of looking for one or two magic ingredients, focus on what your plate looks like day in and day out. "Aim for a Mediterranean-type diet with more whole grains and vegetables, minimal intake of sugar and sweets, and less protein from meat," Chan says. If you enjoy eating meat try wild, Pacific salmon or skinless poultry.

Avoid prostate problems - get some exercise every day and enjoy a healthy diet rich in vegetables!

Scam Alert

Many good folks have received phone calls recently - supposedly from the IRS. Whether they leave a message or the person talks to them on the phone, they tell you that there is a warrant out for your arrest for unpaid taxes, etc. Then they offer to take care of it, but they will need information from you.

Don’t fall for it! The IRS does not contact taxpayers in this manner, and they will not ask for personal information over the phone.

They can be persistent, as evidenced by them calling my 87 year old parents multiple times. When my parents called me and asked me about it I told them to tell the crooks they contacted the FBI which stopped the calls immediately. They subsequently did contact the FBI and the FBI gave them an 800 number to call to report. This is very prevalent and does need to be reported for tracking purposes.

Make the Most of Your Morning

How do you start your typical day? A cup of coffee? Some quiet time maybe? Or is it a quick shower and off to the races getting the little ones off to school and day-care?

Many healthy fitness lovers enjoy a few minutes of exercise in their early morning routine. These healthy folks find they often have more energy throughout the day after some refreshing early morning exercise. Try it for a couple weeks. Get up a few minutes earlier each day and start your morning with some slow stretches and an energetic, heart-pumping run. Don't feel quite ready for running yet? Start walking. Gradually increase your time and intensity a little each day. The key is to get your heart-rate up and get to the point where your lungs are really working! Every few minutes - push yourself a little harder for a couple minutes. Then back off to a slightly more comfortable pace.

For a more toned, and muscular body - add some simple weight-bearing exercise to your routine. Do a couple sets of 10 push ups before you head out for the day.

Follow up your morning cardio with a protein packed breakfast. Give your body a good dose of healthy protein early and your metabolism will stay elevated longer throughout the day. Your body will be burning calories hours after that energizing morning run! Give your fat-burners a healthy kick-start every morning and you'll soon feel like you have more energy.

Try this daily for 21 days. Exercise every day. Or, at least 5 days out of every week. Daily exercise will kick-start those endorphins that help you enjoy life more. These miracle chemicals usually lead to more happy days and far fewer stressful days! If you've been slowly adding inches around your waistline and mid-section, take heart! You can enjoy life more with unimaginable levels of energy and vitality. Try starting your day with some energizing exercise and see if you don't feel more energetic all day!
